Feeling Good Week in Hertfordshire

Hundreds of children and young people across Hertfordshire were given a physical and mental health boost after 91 projects were awarded a share of £40,000 to put towards a huge range of activities to mark this year’s Feeling Good Week like yoga and circus skills.

Feeling Good Week, which started on Saturday 17 February, is a Hertfordshire-wide event that sees schools and the wider community promoting young people’s emotional wellbeing, raising awareness of mental health and where to access support within the school community.

Twelve young people from YC Hertfordshire, formerly Youth Connexions, judged which schemes should be funded from the pot earmarked by the county’s two NHS clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) and Hertfordshire County Council, with bids submitted through Healthwatch Hertfordshire.

Dr Prag Moodley, a Stevenage GP who leads on mental health services for East and North Hertfordshire CCG, said: “Each year Feeling Good Week grows in popularity and more children and young people have fun while learning new skills to boost their physical and mental health, making them happier and more resilient.”

Dr Rami Eliad, a Watford GP who leads on services for children and young people for Herts Valleys CCG, added: “A number of this year’s Feeling Good Week activities were linked to Hertfordshire’s hugely successful stigma-busting #JustTalk campaign, encouraging everyone, especially boys and young men to talk about their mental health and seek help early.”

Projects granted funding include:

  • Broxbourne East Children’s Centre’s ‘Into the Woods’ forest school to develop self-esteem and confidence in boys aged 2-4 years through outdoor play.
  • Circus skills and trampolining workshops for children with special needs at CHIPS (Children's Integrated Playschemes) in Hoddesdon and Ware.
  • A wellbeing week at St Michaels JMI, Apton Road, Bishop's Stortford, starting with trampolining and including a parent workshop and mindfulness.
